Blending Old & New: How we Create a Collected Design in Your Home

Your home should reflect your personal style and be a reflection of you. Determining your design style can often be a struggle for many to pinpoint. Combining old and new allows a collected look to become interesting again while incorporating history with personality and trends.

Collecting and gathering pieces from antique shops, family heirlooms, trails, flea markets, art galleries, and gifts can aid in creating a sense of who the world perceives you as. Combining the new with the old and adding textures, shapes, and colors allows it to transform a space and make it feel your own.

Tip #1: Intention is Everything

Going to a furnishing store and purchasing a room set is easy. Every component in a given space matters, and the stories that come with the pieces you choose to showcase should reflect that. Feeling and aesthetics should go hand in hand to mix decor and create interest.

These are the keys to creating a unique and beautiful living space. I like for my clients to feel that their input, culture, and experiences are reflected throughout their rooms. This way, you will almost always find finishes and variations exclusive to their home.

Tip #2: Rules & Exceptions

For every design "rule," there is an exception. Rules are meant to be broken, and blending the old with the new often pays off majorly.

This can be applied by adding small pops of color, adding in "junk" pieces, combining textures, incorporating organic shapes, and building trust so that your vision soars. Mixing finishes such as high gloss shelves and antique frames are always a nice way to mix the old with the new and add interest.

Tip #3: The Power of Texture

When dealing with antiques, flea market finds, and heirlooms, it is always important to offset bold and blend neutrals. No two pieces should overpower the other. The key to creating a room full of texture, with pops of color, is to create visual variety and assimilation of decor. As long as the flow of size and complementary pieces are aligned, our room should be sure to stun!
