How We'll Help You Upgrade Your Home with the Right Door Hardware

Celeste, is something as apparent as hardware worth investing in with upgrades? Absolutely! Sometimes, it's the smallest details that can make a significant impact–especially when it's as axiomatic as a doorknob. Door hardware is often overlooked, yet it’s a worthwhile investment that can drastically elevate your home’s aesthetic.

Knobs vs. Levers for Interior Doors

There are various door hardware types, but the most commonly used are doorknobs and levers. Doorknobs require you to turn them to open a door and don't offer as much grip. They can be more difficult for some (i.e. children, people with disabilities, or someone with wet hands) to open, so it’s important to take these factors into account.

Levers are much easier to use due to the bar-like handle you push down to open a door. This is what I have in my home for that reason, but they can also be a bit of a nuisance at times if purse a strap or sleeve gets caught on one and causes me to be pulled back.

While both are practical, their aesthetics are different. Both provide a beautiful visual upgrade, can increase your resale value, improve functionality, and create style uniformity.

Understanding Privacy, Passage, Dummy and knobs and pulls

When breaking down different types of door hardware, the most common are passage, privacy, dummy, flush, knobs and handles.

Passage knobs: Hardware that is on both sides of the door without a locking mechanism. These are best for kids’ bedrooms, walk-in closets and pantries.

Privacy knobs: Hardware that is also on both sides of the door that include locks and are best used in bathrooms or master suites or any other rooms where you want the option of added privacy.

Dummy knobs: One-sided and non-functional, primarily used for pulling open linen or coat closets.

Flush knobs: These are smaller handles used for linen cabinets, bypass, and bifold closets and storage cabinets or sometimes drawers.

Handles (also called pulls) : Can be used on cabinet doors, drawers, and integrated appliances such as wood-paneled refrigerators or dishwashers.

Front Door Fixtures & Finishes

Front door fixtures come in many finishes, such as, black, brass, bronze, chrome, and nickel. The finish you choose can reflect your personal style and accessorize your door, much like jewelry complements an outfit.

I recommend that you try to create cohesion between the inside and outside of your home wherever possible, so consider choosing a front door finish that compliments the finishes inside your home. This doesn’t mean that everything needs to match–it’s more of a guideline for creating harmony.

Traditional Hardware vs. Modern Touch Keypads

Modern society values convenience, and that applies to outdoor hardware as well. Many clients are moving to touch keypads, even on traditional homes. Touch keypads offer features such as access codes, integration with smart home systems and phones, and enhanced security. In contrast, traditional keypads require physical keys for access.

How to Choose the Perfect Hardware Color & Finish

As mentioned earlier, there are many hardware colors and finishes to choose from. The most popular hardware color and finish is brushed nickel because it seamlessly compliments almost any design style, can be easily found in any type of household hardware, and offers a timeless look. Many clients base their choice on cabinet color, desired impact, and personal taste.
