Choosing the Right Countertops for Your Dream Kitchen
Kitchen countertops can set the tone in your home, aesthetically and functionally, so it is important to carefully consider what matters most to you. Durability and resistance are going to be what greatly differ when comparing your options. When it comes down to your final decision, will overall aesthetic pull more weight, or will porosity and maintenance be of greater importance?
Quartz: Strong & Stylish
Quartz is a fan favorite and for good reason. It’s a manufactured combination of resin, minerals, and color, and comes in an array of pattern and color variations, with many closely resembling marble and granite.
Quartz is often considered superior due to its non-porous, scratch, and stain resistance, which also means that it will require minimal maintenance and is easy to clean. However, if you are used to setting a hot pan directly on your current natural stone, think twice. Since it is made with epoxy, the material can discolor from the heat. Plan on using a hot pad or trivet to protect your quartz countertop.
Granite: Natural & Durable
Granite is a natural stone and its beauty is derived from its organic inconsistencies. It is known for being extremely durable, but it is also heat, scratch, and stain resistant. This easy-cleanup option is fairly low maintenance; however, it does require resealing from time to time to ensure its resistant qualities.
Marble: Elegant & Classic
Marble is a stunning natural material that has been around for ages but has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. While this natural stone provides an elegant and timeless result, it is considered high-maintenance, requiring resealing regularly. Marble is very porous; therefore, it is prone to both scratches and staining. It requires specific cleaning products and can be easily etched and discolored.
I like to really assess my client's lifestyle and preferences prior to installing marble. I find that transparency is key here due to the sheer fragility of this option; however, I ultimately let the client choose what's best for them. Like the 1,000-year-old marble in Rome, every little etch and stain can also be mesmerizing and add to the beauty of it over time. It really depends on each individual client.
Kitchen countertop materials vary significantly, with each offering its own set of pros and cons. One major distinction to be considered is always cost. For example, the polarity in price between marble and granite can be immense.
