Throughout my career as an Interior Designer I have found a reoccurring thread. Clients tend to focus on decorating every, single room in the house before they get to making their master bedroom a priority.
You tend to focus on what other people think. You tend to put your kids needs ahead of yours. You tend to put YOU last. Can I make a recommendation… STOP THAT NOW!
today we’re going to change that, got it ;)

Here we go…..
1. First on your list is the Bedding. Choose something that has some personality to help pull the look together. This is the component that will direct you with everything else you select.
Duvets are nice because you can choose the insert. You might prefer a down insert that keeps it lightweight or you can choose a fiber fill insert if you have allergies to down feathers. Select a duvet that is 100% cotton or mostly cotton. The look of cotton is great & it’s a breathable fabric that will keep you from getting too warm at night. For more on selecting the best bedding for your preferences be sure to check out my earlier post The 5 C’s to Designing a Bedroom for a Good Night’s Sleep.
2. Upholstered headboards are a great option. If you’ve been sleeping with your pillows up against the wall or an ugly, outdated, hand me down headboard this is an economical way to have a huge impact on the look of your master bedroom.
It will also add comfort & buffer the noise which will add to the comfort of your bedroom.
3. Nightstands are a key piece to adding comfort & pulling your master bedroom all together. Having storage is so important. Look for one that you can store books, reading glasses, lotions & any personal items you might usually have sitting out. You also want one that has a nice surface to hold your lamp, accents & whatever else you need close to you at night.
4. There is a little more thought to selecting a Lamp for your nightstand than you might think. You might find one that has great style but be sure to take a closer look. Consider the height first. In most applications I suggest it should be around 28” high. The light output is also very important. Choose one that offers options to make it softer or brighter. A USB port is also a plus if you plan to charge your phone on your nightstand.
5. An Area rug will help to anchor the bed & offer a soft surface to step onto when waking up. Choose one that is soft to the touch but has a style or pattern that complements the bedding.
6. Accent pillows & a throw blanket will add a fun detail to the look of your bedding. It’s not necessary to add another pattern. You can add a lot of pizzazz with choosing pillows & throws with texture.
7. A Bench for the end of your bed is not only a functional addition to your master bedroom, it serves to help balance the space. A bench is also a good place to roll your duvet back if you choose to sleep with a lightweight blanket or sheets.
Choose one that is about two thirds the width of your bed to keep it proportionate without overpowering your bed.
8. No bedroom is complete without Art. You don’t need to overdo it. Your priority should be finding something for over the bed. I love the look of a canvas triptych that creates a landscape scene that can help ground the space above the headboard without a heavy look.
9. Accessories are the finishing touch for your master bedroom. Look for small pieces that will add a touch of detail to your nightstands & other surfaces without having a cluttered look. Choose wisely. Make sure these pieces speak to your heart. For more about selecting accent pieces be sure to read my earlier blogpost How to Decorate Your Bookshelves with Intention
10. Last but not least Picture Frames for family photos are a necessity. This is a way to add life & love to your personal space. Keep your photos updated & enjoy being reminded of how special family is. It’s a way to brighten up your morning & wind down the end of your day.
I hope this has you excited about pulling your master bedroom all together. It’s really a lot of fun once you get started. Make yourself a priority. It’s time to be a little selfish & spend some time & money on you. I assure you, bedtime will be a lot more enjoyable. I promise.
